Não sei quando morri. Sempre me pareceu que morri velho, por volta dos noventa anos, e que anos, e que o meu corpo o comprovava, da cabeça aos pés. No entanto, neste final de tarde, sozinho na minha cama gelada, sinto que vou ser mais velho do que o dia, do que a noite em que o céu caiu com todas as suas luzes sobre mim, o mesmo céu que tantas vezes olhei, desde que vagueava pela terra longínqua. Porque hoje tenho medo demais para me ouvir apodrecer, para esperar pelos grandes e violentos baques do coração, pelas contorções do ceco sem saída e para esperar que se cumpram na minha cabeça os longos assassínios, o assalto aos pilares inquebrantáveis, o amor com os cadáveres. Vou portanto contar a mim mesmo uma história, vou portanto tentar contar mais uma vez a mim mesmo uma história, para tentar acalmar-me, e é nessa história que sinto que serei velho, muito velho, ainda mais velho do que no dia em que caí, clamando por socorro, e o socorro chegou. Ou talvez nessa história eu tenha regressado à terra, depois de morrer. Não, não é o meu género, regressar à terra, depois de morrer.
