(...) there's no such thing as adventure. There's no such thing as romance.

#brilliantdialogues
SIMPLE MEN, Hal Hartley, 1992
NED - I had never held a gun before.
BILL- Yeah? But don't hold it too long. Listen, you take that to a gun shop. Don't take anything less than 150 bucks for it. Ok?
NED - Ok!
BILL - I'm gonna take these tools.
NED - What is that thing?
BILL - That's the blessed virgin, Ned.
NED - She's pretty, huh?
BILL - Not only is she pretty, but she has got a nice personality. And she is the mother of God.
NED - Can I keep it?
BILL - Be good to her and she'll be good to you.
NED - Thanks Bill.
BILL- No mention.
NED - I wish I could be more like you.
BILL - You don't wanna be like me.
NED - I mean, you just get up and go. Take charge of things. You're your own man.
BILL - Ned, I don't even know where I am going.
NED - That's what life's all about! The adventure. The not knowing.
BILL - No it isn't.
NED - I want adventure! I want romance!
BILL - Ned, there's no such thing as adventure. There's no such thing as romance. There's only trouble and desire.
NED - Trouble and desire?
BILL - That's right. And the funny thing is when you desire something, you immediately get in trouble. And when you're in trouble, you don't desire anything at all.
NED - I see...
BILL - It's impossible...
NED - It's ironic...
BILL - It's a fucking tragedy, it's what it is, Ned.

yet undiscovered voice of the new American poetry

 Henry Fool, Hal Hartley, 1997

SECRETARY: How marginal should a yet undiscovered voice of the new American poetry be?
EDITOR 1: Pretty damn marginal, I think.
EDITOR 2: Down right controversial, probably.
EDITOR 1: How's he striking?
SECRETARY: He has been denounced by his local Board of Education.
EDITOR 2: Oh, I read about him in the paper. He hangs out in a delicatessen somewhere, and writes pornography.
--
EDITOR 1: Hello. Why do you think I should take valuable time out of my busy schedule to read this?
SIMON GRIM: Because it's a masterpiece.
EDITOR 1: Really?
SIMON GRIM: Yes.
EDITOR 1: Are you hearing this?
SECRETARY: Oh! He's adorable!

''God has something planned for you? What?''

#brilliantdialogues
AMATEUR (Hal Hartley, 1994)
Martin Donovan + Isabelle Huppert
- How was your date?
- I think there's something wrong with me.
- How long has it been since you left the convent, Isabelle?
- 10 months.
- How long have you been there?
- 15 years.
- It's a long time.
- When I make mistakes, they tend to be big ones.
- Were you always religious?
- No. When I was a girl I wasted a lot of time writing bad poetry.
(...) I am a nymphomaniac.
- What?
- It's true.
- You don't look like one.
- Like a nymphomaniac?
- Yeah.
- How would you know ?
- ...
- But I lied.(...) I was scared when I knew that God had something planned for me.
- God has something planned for you? What?
- I don't know yet. The Virgin didn't tell me that. But she did say that it was going to be difficult and hard. And I need to be out in the real world to do it. Not in a convent.
- ...
- I was 17, I was scared and I lied. I lied for 15 years until I couldn't bare it any longer. ... Will you make love to me?
- When?
- When you finish that bath.
- Why me?
- Why not you?
- You don't know me. You don't know my name.
- You don't know your name either.
- Have you ever had sex?
- No.
- How can you be a nymphomaniac who never had sex?
- I am choosy.
- I need to shave.
- Is this OK? I use it on my legs. ((hands him a razor))
- I don't think you are a nymphomaniac.
- You don't?
- No.
- Will you make love to me?
- Ah! ((makes shaving cut in the face))
- I did the same thing yesterday. Here.
- I think I am in too much pain to make love tonight.
- I can wait. ((smokes and stares)) I have waited all my life.

AMATEUR (Hal Hartley, 1994)
Martin Donovan + Isabelle Huppert
- Hi.
- Hello.
- What's wrong?
- I am mediocre.
- You are, hum...?
- And I am not sexual.
- No, you are definitely sexual.
- I am cold and intellectual. Too pale. Altogether too ethereal. And my feet hurt from wearing these stupid shoes.
- You wanna make love?
- No. Not now. I am tired.
- I would like to rent a movie.
- A dirty movie?
- Well... Hum.. Yeah.
- OK. This is my membership card for the video-store. It's over there. (...)

TRUST (Hal Hartley, 1990)
MATTHEW - You gotta leave this house!
MARIA - I have to take care of my mother.
MATTHEW - Your mother is a psychopath.
MARIA - She's just in pain, that's all.
MATTHEW - What is that doing in here?
MARIA - How does this work?
MATTHEW - Why do you wanna know that for? Give me that thing!
MARIA - No. How does it work?
MATTHEW - Why??
MARIA - I just wanna know.
MATTHEW - You see this pin? You pull that, wait 8 seconds and...
MARIA - Boom.
MATTHEW - Sleep in here tonight. I don't mean with me, I mean... sleep here, in a bed.
MARIA - Peg says you have a reputation.
MATTHEW - What kind of reputation?
MARIA - A dangerous reputation.
MATTHEW - Peg has got a reputation herself.
MARIA - I wanna become a nun.
MATTHEW - No you don't.
MARIA - Yes I do.
MATTHEW - No you don't. You're just having some kind of... severe reaction.
MARIA - I don't wanna feel anything.
MATTHEW - Well, I bet nuns feel things. You have to be dead not to feel things. You don't want to be dead, do you?
((Maria and Matthew kiss. She's still holding the grenade in her hand.))
