(...) there's no such thing as adventure. There's no such thing as romance.

SIMPLE MEN, Hal Hartley, 1992
NED - I had never held a gun before.
BILL- Yeah? But don't hold it too long. Listen, you take that to a gun shop. Don't take anything less than 150 bucks for it. Ok?
NED - Ok!
BILL - I'm gonna take these tools.
NED - What is that thing?
BILL - That's the blessed virgin, Ned.
NED - She's pretty, huh?
BILL - Not only is she pretty, but she has got a nice personality. And she is the mother of God.
NED - Can I keep it?
BILL - Be good to her and she'll be good to you.
NED - Thanks Bill.
BILL- No mention.
NED - I wish I could be more like you.
BILL - You don't wanna be like me.
NED - I mean, you just get up and go. Take charge of things. You're your own man.
BILL - Ned, I don't even know where I am going.
NED - That's what life's all about! The adventure. The not knowing.
BILL - No it isn't.
NED - I want adventure! I want romance!
BILL - Ned, there's no such thing as adventure. There's no such thing as romance. There's only trouble and desire.
NED - Trouble and desire?
BILL - That's right. And the funny thing is when you desire something, you immediately get in trouble. And when you're in trouble, you don't desire anything at all.
NED - I see...
BILL - It's impossible...
NED - It's ironic...
BILL - It's a fucking tragedy, it's what it is, Ned.
